THIS WEEK AT MOLESWORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL
The Scientists are coming!!!
Tomorrow we welcome 3 young scientists from UTAS to share with the 3/4. 4/5 and 5/6 classes all about their study and their journey so far. Our students are very lucky to receive these visitors. It is always great to have opportunities for students to think about all the different career pathways available to them.
The Young Tassie Scientists who’ll be visiting us are:
Eve Poland – Potion Maker! (chemist)
Samuel Verne – Illuminating the Darkness (physicist)
Serah Kalpakavadi – Medical doctor turned stroke researcher (medical scientist)
The Power of Water!!
What a weekend we had with so much soaking rain. Sadly our beautiful bridges have suffered from all the water and the bank has become unstable. The bridges have been barricaded off and we are currently meeting with the Department to come up with a plan to bring them back better that ever, for all our students and the so so many more from schools all over the Southern part of the state.
The Grade 3/4 class had a fantastic day at the MEC yesterday and got to experience the joy of an amazing waterfall that rarely flows. Lots of very muddy children went home with huge smiles on their faces. Thanks to Mrs Young and Trish for their amazing alternative program while not being able to access the Team Building course.
Book Week 2022 – 22nd – 26th August
Have you ever dreamt with your eyes open? That is this year’s theme.
All classes have been sharing the short listed books, enjoying the amazing literature, and wondering which one will win.
Keep an eye out to see how our young minds dream with their eyes open. Each class is busy creating a display for our outside notice board and are producing a video to share every day next week via SeeSaw.
Will we see – An elephant tree walking? A glasshouse of stars? Maybe The walking whales or Amira’s suitcase? Perhaps an iceberg or a Stellarphant (almost an elephant but stellar!)?
Check in to Seesaw each day next week to see them all and next time you walk past our notice board stop by and see if you too can dream with your eyes open.
Your voice matters.
At School Association last week we spoke about how best can we communicate with our families. For any thoughts, suggestions, ideas on what works best for you talk with your parent reps or drop us a line. We are always looking for ways to best keep our families connected to their school and their child’s learning.
This term we have started an inquiry that combines History, Science and Literacy.
We have been reading the book Now and Then by Tasmanian author Fiona Levings which is about a boy named Jem who lives in the same house where a boy named Doug lived 70 years before. The book compares the lives of the two boys, their families and the animals that live with them. We have been writing about the character traits of the boys and will be moving on to looking deeper at the way of life in the past.
Our scientific work has begun with an investigation of how things are made. This week we connected to a glass blower via UTAS’ Children’s TV which told us all about how glass is made and the process to make bottles and other useful objects.
We continue to build our literacy and numeracy skills as well with lots of letters and sounds work, reading, counting, patterns and problem-solving.
Young Portrait Artists representing Molesworth Primary in the Young Archies Competition for 2022.
The Grade 2/3 and 5/6 classes were offered the opportunity to create an original portrait of someone they know. Congratulations to the students whose works have been selected to be included in the exhibition. More details about where the exhibition can be viewed will be posted in future newsletters. In each portrait we see the connection they feel with each person they have chosen to draw.
GRADE 5-6 VISIT FROM THE MAYOR
Last week the 5/6 class welcomed the Mayor of the Derwent Valley, Michelle Dracoulis, to their classroom to voice their concerns about rubbish disposal, recycling and the environment. Students proudly presented their letters and talked about their journey so far to make Molesworth Primary more sustainable. It was fantastic to see students voicing their concerns and sharing their ideas about important issues that impact our school and the environment.
We have started our racquet sport focus with tennis this term. Over the last two weeks we have been lucky to have Jordan from Tennis Tasmania come and visit our PE lessons. Lots of skill development and modified tennis games were played on our tennis court!
Here are some comments from our tennis super stars:
- Eliza - you can jump to the side and hit the ball.
- Lila - I learnt that you can hit the tennis ball in any direction over the net.
- Reevie - we got to use the racquets. We learnt some new tennis games.
- Kaiden - we rolled the ball in between crocodile teeth cones!
- Ella - you have to swing very gently so the tennis ball doesn’t go really high for your partner to hit it.
- Vinnie - we had to catch the tennis ball and run to the line! I had fun!
- Lachlan - I learnt not to rush when hitting the tennis ball. It’s not all about winning.
- Henry A - I got better at trapping the tennis ball as it was coming towards me.
- Oliver G - My tennis skills got better! Especially being able to control the tennis ball.
- Heidi - I leant not to swing and hit the ball too high, if you do it will go over the fence!
- Ellis - tennis is fun! You can trap the ball in the centre of the racquet.
Thank you to Jordan from Tennis Tasmania for coming out to us and developing our skills and knowledge of tennis.
We would like to say a huge thank you to our school community for throwing back our tennis balls afterschool and in the morning when you see them over our fences! It is very much appreciated!
What is heat and what sources of heat do we rely on?
How can heat be produced and transferred?
Are only a few of the questions that we’ve been focusing on so far this term. 2-3 Scientists noticed animals using some intelligent strategies to stay warm such as penguins huddling in arctic conditions and monkeys bathing in hot springs. 2-3 Scientists quickly realised there are many ways in which we use heat to stay warm and survive. We identified and sorted images of everyday items that might feel warm and hot and used a range of tables and charts to categorise these items. Students have learnt that kinetic, electrical, and chemical energy are the three main types of heat that can be produced.
Here are some scientific diagrams, photographs and reflections straight from our fiery 2-3 Scientists:
CHANGE TO O'DRISCOLL'S AFTERNOON BUS RUN
O'Driscoll Coaches contacted us regarding an upcoming change to their afternoon school bus service from Molesworth Primary to Black Hills.
This is effective from Monday 22nd August 2022. The afternoon Molesworth Primary - Black Hills via New Norfolk school bus will no longer travel via the old Royal Derwent site. It will instead travel via Lyell Hwy with a new stop opposite Atholmont St on Hobart Road and will then proceed via Montagu St and Burnett St to New Norfolk Primary, where the route will then continue as normal.
Route details can be found on our website https://derwentvalleylink.com.au/timetable-maps/school-services/black-hills-to-molesworth-via-new-norfolk-schools/#map
If you have any enquiries regarding this change, you are welcome to contact O'Driscoll Coaches on 6261 4653.
