FROM OUR PRINCIPAL MRS LEANNE SMITH
Wow, how quickly Winter has come this week. As the mornings are so chilly children are more than welcome to wear coats over their school uniform but please check they have their school jumper on as well. There are still many lost jumpers at school so please check lost property if you are missing one.
This week and last, all teachers have been busy with parent teacher meetings. These meetings are so beneficial for both teachers and parents to support the very best for your child. If you have not yet made a time there are still times available. If you are not able to make a time this week your child’s teacher will touch base with you via a phone call before the end of term.
Our outdoor pinboards are now up and children are busy preparing their work to share on these boards. All classes have been discussing what children want and need to be happy, healthy, secure and to have the very brightest futures Tasmania can offer them. We began with a book titled – “When I wake up I smile…….” With the focus on doing things together. Please take time to learn from the voices of our children about what makes them smile. There are so many wonderfully positive comments about who is important to them.
MINI OLYMPICS – WEDNESDAY 30th JUNE
Next week as a fun way to complete the term of PE Miss Gourlay and Mrs Wiseman have been busy planning a PE session incorporating being an Olympian. The focus of the session is all about participation, team support, doing your best and having fun. All children have been put into a country group and we are asking if they have a t-shirt of that colour to wear on the day. The countries are Australia (Green/Gold), Japan (White), Greece (Blue) and France (Red). Japan being the current country, Greece the original, France the next country and Australia being us. Your children know what colour to wear but if they are not sure please check in with their class teacher. The session is from 11:00 am until 12:30 pm next Wednesday and parents are welcome to watch. This is not about competition with winners and ribbons. The activities are team based focusing on full participation. To finish all children will receive a mini olympic ribbon. If you would like to attend, please check in at the office before coming down to the oval. There won’t be an area set up for parents, you are welcome to go to where your children are to watch them participate.
As this is the last newsletter for the term I would like to thank everyone for a great term at Molesworth and hope everyone enjoys the 2 week break with their kids. Term 3 begins on Tuesday 20th July.
Yesterday more than 1800 of Tasmania’s most aspiring primary school runners for 2021 competed at the Athletics Tasmania’s all School’s Cross Country at Symmons Plains - 6 of these runners were from our very own Molesworth Primary School! From the recent SPSSA Division B carnival, Conor, Joseph, Addison, Charlotte, Haley and Maia were invited to compete at the All Schools Cross Country. An incredible achievement by these students. They represented our school amazingly and their efforts were outstanding. Well done!!
WHAT'S ON IN 3-4 - HANDS ON SCIENCE WITH MR HAY
3-4 has been very busy this term testing out how forces and energy works in our Science experiments of late. We have built marble runs to turn the pull of gravity into moving energy, tested the buoyancy of objects, made magnet race tracks and floating magnetic compasses, elastic energy powered boats and even flying helicopters!
Our focus has been on observing how things work, problem solving to make them work more consistently and seeing what happens when we make changes to objects and comparing them. Curious minds and looking closely when observing make for good scientists.
Any of these experiments could also be tried at home too. Any budding scientists can report back to Mr Hay with what they found out.
YEAR 5-6 SQUASH HPE EXCURSION WITH MISS GOURLAY
Squash is not just a fruit; it is also a popular international sport played in over 150 countries by 20 million people!! As part of our racquet sport focus this term, on Wednesday 9th June the year 5/6 students went to the Bellerive Squash Centre to try their skills at squash. No one from the 5/6 class had ever tried squash before so they were going in very excited and nervous!
The activities included a time trial testing our agility skills reaching all 6 points of the squash court, serving within the lines on the wall trying to win points and rallying and hitting modified squash balls.
Here are some comments from some 5/6 students about squash:
Declan – I liked hitting the soft squash balls.
Alexia – I enjoyed the time trial activity.
Dante – The squash chair was cool with all the racquets!
Meghan – my favourite activity was when we had to push all the soft squash balls to the other side.
Darcy – it was fun because we got to rotate around different activities.
This term the SRC have been working on a bread bag fundraiser, 5 cent jar fundraiser and selling icy poles on Fridays. The bread bags will be finishing on the 20th of July so we need to collect more! Don’t forget we are collecting bread tags too and we only have about a third of what we need for both the bread bags and tags.
The 5 cents are going well, so far Prep-1WY are in the lead followed by Kinder and Year 2-3. The 5 cents are going to be going till the end of term. All this money will be going to the school and children’s ward in the Royal Hobart hospital.
YEAR 4-5 BADMINTON HEP EXCURSION WITH MISS GOURLAY
Who's making all the racquet?! The students at Molesworth! As part of our racquet sport focus this term, we had the pleasure of Lasse Bundgaard return to Molesworth Primary to run another Badminton clinic with us. Lasse is the recent and former National Australian Coach and has a wealth of knowledge and experience in coaching both senior and junior players. It was a fantastic opportunity for our kids to be coached by Lasse and to ask lots of questions!
On Friday 18th of June to finish our badminton unit, the year 4/5 class visited the South Hobart Badminton Association courts. The courts had just been resurfaced and we were one of the first school groups to test them out. The students couldn’t believe how big the venue was! The students did a warm-up with Lasse including a partner knee tap game which was very tricky. We were challenged with trying to hit the shuttle as high as we could – the ceiling at the venue is very tall. The students played singles and double matches as well as a game called king of the court. Lots of fun was had! When you see one of our 4/5 students around Molesworth you should ask them to tell you all about our excursion!
Here are some comments from some of our 4/5 students about their excursion:
Ethan – It was AWESOME! I love how high you can hit the shuttle.
Aisha – I liked getting into a rally with Lily, Violetta and Violet. And having fun!
Chayse – I liked playing with my friends and Lasse.
Myler – I enjoyed when we played doubles it gave me more opportunity to hit the shuttle.
Lucas – I loved the games and Lasse taught us the hitting techniques and how the lines work.
