FROM OUR PRINCIPAL MRS LEANNE SMITH
Another very busy 2 weeks around the school. Today almost all the fencing around the construction areas was removed and we have access to almost all areas of the school grounds back. The stairwell down to the playground is still marked off until the pathway is asphalted. This should be completed in the next couple of weeks. The screening infront of the toilets has been completed and the pathways from the hall path will be opened next week. Next week the soil will arrive and the planning for the planting of the garden beds has begun. Last Friday we met with a contractor for the redoing of the front school pathways and garden area and we are waiting to hear back with pricing and timing of this.
In every classroom we see lots of learning with rich converstaions and questioning throughout. Yesterday I visited the 3/4 class and they were immersed in using magnets to create compasses, lots and lots of questions and excitement when they got it to work. Last week I read a number of amazing stories from the grade 5/6 class as their entries in the What Matters competition. It is so interesting to read from a students personal point of view about what is important to them. Also last week Esther from Prep/1 WY came to visit to show me a wooden table she had designed, planned and constructed using a saw, level and hammer. So much varied learning everywhere.
This Friday is our whole school cross country. It is always wonderful to have parent support but please make sure you are parked by 10.50 as we will be marking off the parking area as children run through this area from the rec ground to the school. The start and finsh points are on the rec ground.
Take your marks, set, go, it is Cross Country time! This Friday we will be having our Molesworth Cross Country from 11am-12.30pm. All of our students have walked their courses which all start at the recreation ground and they are very eager to have-a-go!
Please Note:
- Access to the recreation ground will be closed from 10.50am onwards for cone and line marking of cross country courses.
- Access to the parent car park closest to the recycling centre will be coned off from 10.50am to prepare the cross country course.
- Students will be seated in the middle of the recreation ground oval. Please feel free to sit around the course but due to physical distancing, we ask you do not sit with our students.
- Any questions please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
Prep/1WY we have been using an inquiry approach to teaching and learning called ‘Investigations’. It combines the need for children to be active participants in their learning (through hands-on and creative exploration and investigation) and sits alongside the explicit teaching of literacy and numeracy as well as all other learning areas. During this time students have the opportunity to investigate their wonderings, explore the properties and elements of things, to problem solve, to take risks, to think deeply, to construct ideas and meaning, to utilise their own understandings and discover new ones, to become interested in endless possibilities and opportunities and to find out, to try, to have a go and to develop resiliency.
WHAT'S HAPPENING IN MUSIC WITH MR HAY
Hello Everyone,
It's been a great start to Term 2 in Music with lots of singing, playing, creating, dancing and moving to music. Moving back into the hall has enabled us to have a larger flexible space to have fun making music together. Many thanks to Mrs Browning with helping me use and setup/packup the library as the building works went on over the last year. Excitingly now we have access to a new marimba courtesy of the School Association purchasing one for the school to use with our xylophones. Thank you very much School Association! The students are loving using it so much and we have decided to purchase another one so we can provide even more students the opportunity to play on one more regularly. The marimba has been a great addition to our music resources giving us lots of choice and flexibility with what we can play in each class. Watch out for it in an assembly sometime later this year!
Mr Hay.

PARALYMPICS AUSTRALIA EDUCATION PROGRAM
Molesworth was very lucky this term, we had a visit from not only 1 but 2 Australian Paralympic Athletes!! Jenny Blow and Jonty O’Callaghan visited 3 schools in Tasmania this term, and we were one of them!
With two Paralympic Games under her belt, Jenny is one of the Australian goalball team’s most experience competitors and Jonty is one of Australias emerging para-alpine skiers. Jenny and Jonty spoke with all of our students about their own journeys, the Olympics and Paralympics, their disability and disability in sport. We participated in many different activities and modified activities. The activities gave everyone the opportunity to see how it is to participate in activities without their vision. To find out more about these two Paralympians or the Paralympic games visit: https://www.paralympic.org.au/
Here are some of our student’s comments about the Paralympic Australia Education Program visit:
- I enjoyed playing goalball. It was really silent! - Laurie M
- I was interested in the different disabilities and the sports that people with disabilities can play – Arabella M
- I enjoyed all of the activities! – Bryce C
- I enjoyed playing goalball. It was fun. We all weren’t able to see but it was fair still, knowing everyone was even – Conor D
- I liked playing goalball – Matilda P
We all wish Jenny and Jonty the best of luck at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games later this year! We are very appreciative of this amazing opportunity and wish to pass on our thanks to the Paralympic Australia Education Program.
You might see Mr Rogers being very busy around our school, fixing things, moving things, cleaning and gardening. What you might not know about Mr Rogers is that he is a football coach! Currently coaching the Lindisfarne Junior Football Club team, Mr Rogers is very passionate about football and has begun lunch time sessions with our students.
The first session was on Monday and included many football skills and a fun handball game at the end. Thank you, Mr Rogers! We can’t wait to see what the future sessions have in store!
Here are some comments from the students who participated in Mondays session:
- It was fun handballing the ball to a partner – Mitchell K
- I liked how Mr Rogers used his time to train us – Bryce C

Game, set, match!! During our racquet sport focus in our PE lessons this term, our students have been taking to the court, testing their racquet skills, learning how to score points and playing some awesome tennis. Earlier this month we had a special visit from Alyssa and Jordan from Tennis Tasmania. They gave us many helpful tips and some new fun tennis games we can play!
While we are on the topic of tennis, did you hear about the Mini Australian Open that was held in Hobart?! Yesterday our 2/3 and 3/4 classes travelled on the bus to the Hobart Domain Tennis Centre to participate in a Mini Australian Open on their amazing blue tennis courts! Our classes were mixed into 8 teams all named after Australian Tennis players. We had Team Barty, Team DeMinaur, Team Millman, Team Stosur, Team Bourchier and Team Tomljanovic. All teams played in single and double tennis games. Next time you see a Year 2/3 or 3/4 student ask them about the Mini Australian Open and they will be sure to tell you!
We thank our parent helpers and staff for assisting in this excursion! And a special thanks to Alyssa, Jordan and Fairlie from Tennis Tasmania for coaching us and giving us many helpful tennis playing tips throughout our Mini Australian Open!
PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORT TASMANIA STATE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Molesworth has its very own Bendere Oboya (current Australian woman 400m champion) and Catriona Bisset (Australians current woman middle-distance athlete and national record holder in the 800 metres) - and her name is Addison Jelkic!
Humble and hardworking with her athletics, Addison was invited at the SPSSA Athletics Champions Carnival to represent Hobart in the Primary School Sport Tasmania State Athletics Carnival which was held in Launceston on May 6th. Addison competed against other students her age from all across Tasmania, it was going to be a tough competition but there was no match for Addison’s ability! In her favourite event, Addison came 1st in the heat of the girls Year 4 800m and took home the 1st ribbon in the final. On the day Addison ran a PB for both events cutting 3.7 seconds from her 400m time (new PB 1.14) and 8.6 seconds from her 800m time (new PB 2.55).
We would like to pass on a massive congratulations to Addison for her athletics achievements!
