Mount Wellington Bushwalks

Mt. Wellington is an excellent example of Tasmania’s alpine bushland, with magnificent views over Hobart.

We provide fully guided walks and activities.

Themes include:
  • water catchments
  • native vegetation and fauna
  • Hobart's history (early settlers, huts, bushrangers and water supply
  • survival skills
  • geology
  • or just enjoy a bushwalk on the mountain.
There are bushwalks to suit all grades K-12. With enough time, morning tea can be enjoyed at the top of the mountain.

Chalet to the Springs

2 -3 hours – all ages
This walk can focus on native flora and fauna as well as alpine environments and how they differ from lower level areas. There is some interesting geology (we will walk underneath the organ pipes) and fantastic views over Hobart. The path is mostly flat, with some rocky sections, and with a down hill section at the finish. Lunch can be had along the way or at The Springs. This walk can be extended by an hour by including Sphinx Rock.

Silver Falls (Fern Tree) to the Waterworks

2-3 hours - all ages.
This walk is excellent for those investigating the water cycle and catchment areas as it follows the water pipeline along and into the Hobart reservoir. We can also look at changing vegetation from large tree ferns at Silver Falls to wattle scrub and open Eucalypt forest on the lower slopes. The path is easy going, with a steep down hill section at Gentle Annie Falls. The bus drops you off at Fern Tree and picks you up at the Waterworks.

Springs to Fern Tree (via Rocky Whelan's Cave)

1 1/2 -2 hours - all ages.
This walk is mostly down hill to Fern Tree. The track is rocky in some parts. We can look at Rocky Whelan's Cave (a bushranger who lived on the mountain in the 1850's) and Fern Glade - a rainforest area with moss covered rocks, waterfalls and tree ferns. This walk is great for younger students. Older groups can combine it with the Chalet/top of Mt Well to the Springs walk.

Springs to Lenah Valley

3-4 hours - mid primary and up.
This walk passes Sphinx Rock which is a sandstone cliff on the mostly dolerite mountain. There are good views over Hobart and it is a great spot to stop for morning tea. We pass Rock Cabin and Junction Cabin on the way to New Town Falls. There are historic hut ruins along the way, and we come out at the top of Lenah Valley road, where the creek is excellent for having a splash.

Summit to Fern Tree, Springs to Summit or Chalet to the Summit

4 hours - mid primary and up.
For those wanting more of a challenge. Students can be dropped off by the bus at the beginning of the walk and then picked up at the other end. Provides students with an opportunity to challenge themselves whist enjoying a great day out on the mountain. Makes a wonderful end of year activity for grade 6 leavers.

All day - grades 5 to 12.
We start walking along the Myrtle Forest track, turning off to Collins Cap (1098m) about an hour along the track. This walk involves steep climbing, however the view from the top is well worth the effort.
This walk begins with beautiful rainforest, changing to a contrasting alpine environment.
All students will need good shoes, large drink, healthy lunch, warm clothing (including beanie and gloves) and a raincoat.

The MEC coordinator will meet your school bus in Collinsvale and drive with you to the beginning of the track. Please note that a minimum of 41/2 hours is required for this walk for primary age students and 4 hours for high school students.

Myrtle Forest

2-3 hours - All Ages
The Myrtle Forest track starts just out of Collinsvale. This walk can be made as short or long as the group requires.

We walk along a creek side, past many native rainforest species. There are tree ferns, waterfalls, fungi and birds. The walk is up hill to start with and down on the return. There can be some muddy patches. Children will need good shoes, appropriate clothes and plenty to eat and drink.

The MEC coordinator will meet your school bus in Collinsvale and drive with you to the beginning of the walk.
