Molesworth Bushwalks

There are a number of bushwalks within walking distance of the Molesworth Environment Centre. Most walks can be combined with another activity. Collins Cap and Myrtle Forest Track begin just out of Collinsvale. .

Many of these walks have been established on private land, kindly allowed by the landowners. Access is not permitted unless accompanied by Molesworth Environment Centre staff on a school visit. Suggested times for walks will vary depending on the group.

Possum’s Playground

2-3 hours - All age groups, campfire and damper available.
This walk can focus on native animals and plants, trees, soils, lichens, environmental weeds, caves or survival skills. Along the trail there are examples of changing bushland, from open grassland, mixed eucalypt forest and semi rainforest communities. There are also some examples of weed invasion from European settlement of the area. The track has a short steep uphill section, with the remainder downhill and flat. There are some rocky sections. Groups can also go up into the cave area to observe the coloured sandstone, animal habitats and changing vegetation types.

Molesworth View Trail

2-3 hours - Grades 2 and older. Campfire and damper available.
We cross Sorell Creek, and depending on the groups focus, we take a variety of trails up onto the hill area. This walk moves from human modified landscapes into areas of natural bushland. As we reach the top of the hill there are excellent views of Molesworth Valley. Lunch is usually at the cave area, with views of Mt Faulkner. Then we head back to the Environment Centre across the old hop fields and over the rope bridges. The track has a steady climb, some rocky sections and flat over the hop fields to finish.

Hop Picker's Hut

1 hour. A great spot for lunch. Campfire and damper available.
This is a short walk that is mostly flat with one steep section. We can focus on the history of Molesworth Valley and hop picking, or this walk can be combined with a pond visit or a mini beast focus. Wheelchair access is available to the hut. The Hop Pickers Hut was used in the 1940s and there are old photographs and tools for students to explore inside the hut.

All day - grades 4 to 12.
We start walking along the Myrtle Forest track, turning off to Collins Cap (1098m) about an hour along the track. This walk involves steep climbing, however the view from the top is well worth the effort. This walk begins with beautiful rainforest, changing to a contrasting alpine environment. All students will need good shoes, large drink, healthy lunch, warm clothing (including beanie and gloves) and a raincoat. MEC coordinator meets your school bus in Collinsvale and drives with you to beginning of the track. Please note that a minimum of 41/2 hours is required for this walk for primary age students and 4 hours for high school students.

Myrtle Forest

2-3 hours - All Ages
The Myrtle Forest track starts just out of Collinsvale. This walk can be made as short or long as the group requires. We walk along a creek side, past many native rainforest species. There are tree ferns, waterfalls, fungi and birds. The walk is up hill to start with and down on the return. There can be some muddy patches. Children will need good shoes, appropriate clothes and plenty to eat and drink. The MEC coordinator will meet your bus at Collinsvale and drive with you to the start of the walk.
